Recently I saw some comments about...commenting. Like, should the blogger reply to the people who comment? Do the commenters come back to check on whether the blogger replied to their comment?
I also saw some comments that if you don't have something special or profound or new to say, it's rude to leave a comment like, "Great post" or "Thanks for the info!".
Hmmm. Personally I like to get comments. I don't care whether they are super long or special (although that's fun too). I just like knowing someone saw my post and enjoyed the photo or bothered to read what I had to say. Then I enjoy replying if I can because it seems nice to say 'I saw your comment, thanks' or words to that effect. But sometimes I don't have time or I forget to reply to the comments. Then I worry that I've hurt my visitor's feelings...but do they actually even know?
Occasionally I might go back to see if a blogger responded to my comment, especially if it WAS long or sharing something new. But me, I don't get upset if the blogger didn't respond.
I've seen that a couple of blogs I follow are using something called Disqus (sp?) that notifies a commenter of replies from the blogger. Does that seem worth doing?
I asked Toby about this issue and we agreed that we need help. So what do you think - leave a comment! BOL!

I like to get comments too. I try to reply to them all, but sometimes it takes me a while to respond to them all.
But as a reader/commenter I'm not offended if my comment isn't replied to.
We use to reply until we realised no one reads them. Seems more of a wordpress thing. We stopped and nothing changed which was great as we have more time to visit and say Hi. Have a super Saturday.
Best wishes Molly
Thanks Misaki. I'm glad to hear from you.
Thanks Molly! Yes I was wondering if I should disable the reply option for that very reason.
Good question Toby and one I think about a lot too...I don't want to be rude, but I was running out of ways to say Thank You...I guess I'm with Molly on this one...Of course if there's an interesting question that should be answered I make sure and get the answer to the reader, even if its by email or on their blog...and then there's Follow Up Friday blog hop which is a fun way to do a wrapup post and reply to a lot of comments at once
I installed Disqus because I want to make my commenting more interactive. It's been a mixed bag. I have gotten so many messages from people complaining about it, that they don't want to give their information to another website, that it doesn't work for them, that they wanted a jewel-encrusted pony and didn't get one. *sigh* But I think for MOST people it does work and they aren't complaining. If someone asks a question, it's a good way to answer and know that they were notified with the answer, which I like, because while I try to remember to answer when I visit other people's blogs, I don't always remember.
I hadn't thought about using Follow Up Friday that way. Great idea and something to think about. Thank you Gizmo!
Really, people complained to you about it? I don't know much of anything about Disqus but I actually first heard of it on your blog and it really got me thinking. Thank you very much for the feedback.
Hi Amy, I have to be honest here....I do see a lot of people installing Disqus and seem to enjoy it, but to me....if I need to reply to a particular comment, then I will do so via email or through the person's blog. I think we are all busy with our lives...and blogging does take up a huge amount of our time...as I'm sure you know!! So, for us we are going to stay the way we are for now. Hope that helps!

Thank you for responding Jeanne. Yes I agree, blogging takes up a LOT of time, far more than I would have expected before I began. I don't know how people maintain multiple blogs. Good suggestion to just respond individually when needed.
I agree with you - I just like to know that someone read the blog. I am okay with a "great post". Sometimes I don't really know what to say to a post - it's either out of my realm (a dog sport we don't do/don't understand) or so wacky I just don't know what to say. I still want to comment - I read the blog, etc.
I am not fond of Disqus - just another thing to sign up for. No thank you. Plus, I'm not sure it links back to Sam's blog? So now if I visit a new blog I need to make sure I put the website in the comment. Bleh...
Sam
I feel exactly the way you do about comments! I love them. I read them all. But, I don't reply to all of them. I usually only reply to ones with questions in them. Then, I try to email the commenter because I assume that the person probably won't check back to see if I answered. I never check back after I leave a comment.
I'm with Sam about Disqus... I don't like it.
I try to leave comments on all the blog posts I read, but sometimes I don't have much to say or don't have much time. As far as replying goes, I try to reply to comments when people ask a question or something. If someone leaves a comment like - "That's so cute!" I usually don't reply. I really like Disqus because it notifies people of replies to their comments. I've been thinking of using it more and more lately. However, I've asked my readers about it in the past and I felt the general consensus was that many people did not like it... I think it's because you have to login to leave a comment.
Thanks Sam, I'm glad to have your feedback, especially about Disqus.
Thanks KB. That is a really helpful response. I'm glad you love all the comments too, especially since I leave you quite a few :D
Yes I can see how that might put people off (logging in).
i read a lot of blogs but i must admit i am a bit of a lurker. i read but i don't always comment. i know, shame on me but sometimes i feel that my two cents wouldn't make any difference, so i just keep quiet. when i do comment, i rarely go back to see if there is a reply.
i do however, love to read comments to my blogs, so i will make a mid-year resolution to comment more, whether it be long or short or just to say hello... hi amy, great post! :)
Haha thanks coffee dog! So, I finally decided to change comments to the popup window, ie. no more "threaded" comments, and see how that goes. I still do love reading all comments on my blog!
